Maxime Chaya - North Pole Expedition
Midnight Sun comes out as we edge closer to the North Pole

Today we made great progress, 14.2 nautical miles, ending the day at N89.11.05, W56.29.16.

We passed our last degree of latitude before the pole…

We are worn out, almost always hungry and still worried about the drift which carries us further south with every passing day… and yet we are in very high spirits. The midnight sun reminds us of how close we are to our goal.

We’ll soon kick back and relax with Mrs. Claus.

Happy Easter!

Strong Winds drift us South

The Good News: Today we covered 13.6 nautical miles in 11 hours.

The Bad News: We drifted 2 miles south overnight, and likely another 2 miles south during the day, so in reality we skied closer to 15 miles (we measure distance traveled by subtracting Point A at end of Day X from Point B at end of Day Y).

<--------- Check out the Progress Map on the left sidebar to see the drift! It’s very obvious on the map.

It can be very frustrating to work hard all day knowing that while you ski north you are constantly drifting to the south. It is one of the great challenges of any North Pole expedition, and it is commonly referred to as the “Polar Treadmill.”

But we’re still moving forward, 10 steps forward for every 2 steps back!

Our current position is N88.57.43, W63.28.10

Fresh Open Lead!

We are at N88.45.51, W66.15.42.

The wind was out of the WSW at about 20 mph which made the day feel quite raw even though the temperature was only around -8F.

We crossed 1 fresh crack, but otherwise had a mix of rubble and pans.

We will start longer days today for our final push to the pole. We hope to cross 89 degrees tomorrow!

Maxime Chaya - North Pole Expedition
What an Obstacle Course!

Today we experienced warm temperatures of -8F, but not without a stiff wind of 20 MPH out of the west, heading due east.

Just when we thought we were getting out of the rubble and on to better ice we are confronted with more rubble, which is what happened today. Though we logged 10.7 nautical miles north, we skied closer to 14 nautical miles when you account for the zig-zagging and drift.

We are doing well and our spirits are high.

Our current location in degrees, minutes and seconds is N88.11.33, W74.20.46.

Maxime pulling his sled through an overwhelming ridge

Today we had a good day of travel… We passed the 88th Degree!!! Just 2 more to go!
This is a huge achievement, we feel like we are in the home stretch.

While skiing today Lonnie noticed that even his shadow looks skinny. Despite eating 8,000 calories a day (nearly 2.4 lbs of dry food) all three of us are losing weight. It’s clear that food occupies much of our thoughts!

Our position today in degrees, minutes, and seconds is N88.02.19, W76.23.15.
